Chicago Bulls (Very) Early Season Report
DEAR CHICAGO BULLS FANS,
Two losses in the beginning of the season doesn’t mean the end of the season for the Bulls. Especially when the loss against the Hawks was primary due to exhaustion; which led to the horrible defensive play of the starters. Clearly Coach Thibs is playing Deng and Rose too much. You could argue that CJ Watson is injured and therefore is forced to play Rose that much. That’s fine I can agree with you, but you can’t make the same case for Deng. This isn’t the same 82 game season where it might be fine for Deng to play all those minutes because the games are more spread out. This season is 66 games where teams are forced to play stretches of 3 games back-to-back-to-back…..then maybe 3 more in the upcoming 5 days. This game, believe it of not ,should’ve happened the way it did. If Thibs is as good (I’m thinking really really good) as a “Head” Coach as he is believed to be and not just a “Defensive Specialist”, then he will be able to look back and learn from this game. This game is a blessing in disguise and I hope Thibs sees it the same way.
Why Noah isn’t used correctly on offense and how to fix it.
As for the whole Noah situation; he’s a good defender and plays with energy. He plays with intensity every time he’s in. He had very good games against the Clippers and the Magic. I have to credit his poor play to his lack of conditioning. After the run the Hawks had at the start of the game, Noah was gassed. That’s pretty much expected after guarding Dwight Howard the night before. In addition to Thibs using him the wrong way on offense, I really don’t expect him to have that “monster” impact we all expect until gets back in shape.
Now let me explain why I think Noah is being using incorrectly on offense. First of all, why are the Bulls relying on him for a post up threat. Isn’t this why we signed Boozer? Yes I understand Noah has been working on his left hand post shots and is developing it well, but seriously, he should not be the team’s number one post threat. Noah makes a living scoring off put backs from offensive rebounding. How is it possible from him to do that when he has to create a shot for himself? One thing Noah does well is reading the defensive, passing, and he has this mid-range jumper that he can make.

Now if you haven’t noticed, While Boozer has a nice jumper and can hit the mid-range shot effectively, he kind of likes to hang out too far from the basket. This is where Noah should be while Boozer plays closer to the basket where Noah operates right now. Boozer should be the one in the post while Noah sets screens for everyone to either get free for a shot or cut to the basket for an easy lay-up. This is the perfect scenario because Boozer is the better offensive player and can use his post skills to score if the screen doesn’t open anything up; It doesn’t hurt that Boozer is a good passer also. This also makes it easier for Noah to get into positon and fight for rebounds right after the defense has collapsed to the shooter.

Option #2. I’ve noticed that the Bulls ran this play where either Noah or Boozer would cut to the middle of the paint just inside the free throw line. Once they receive the pass they would try to score or pass to a backdoor cutter along the baseline. This might have happened by accident, but I’ve seen both Noah and Boozer cut to that same spot a couple of times. Either way, this should be implemented into the gameplan as it is another way for Noah and Boozer to be effective when playing together.

Utilizing Boozer on offense
Something I do want to see more of is using Boozer on pick and rolls or pick and pops. This can be dangerous when his shots are falling from mid range. If the help defense is there on the pick and roll, Noah should be open cutting to the basket. If Boozer misses the layup, Noah should be there with the put back………….And seriously Thibs needs to tell Boozer to dunk the ball.

Lack of Offense from The Bench Mob
The Bulls are a deep team, they have have excellent depth. But the one thing they are missing is a legitimate offensive threat. Kyle Korver is one of the best shooters in the NBA but he isn’t a good defender. When Kyle Korver run low on the “Hot Sauce”, he is pretty much useless.
Some have suggested moving Boozer to the bench and sliding Taj or Asik into the starting lineup to fix this and the whole “Noah and Boozer can’t play together problem”. In my opinion, that wouldn’t be as effective. It’s no question that a combination of Noah/Taj and Boozer/Asik are both more effective than Noah/Boozer I do have a suggestion that might be a quick fix. If either Boozer or Noah struggles to start a game, how about subbing one of them out right away. That way either Noah or Boozer can regain momentum and get back into rhythm.
Quick Note; If Miami was smart, they would use this tactic when either LeBron or DWade struggles in the beginning of their games. It would benefit not those two, but Chris Bosh and their 2nd unit as well. The 2nd unit would benefit from a well rested LeBron/Wade playing with them.
While that really isn’t a fix at all for adding some offense to the Bench Mob, my only suggestion would through Free Agency. Every Championship team needs a good Sixth Man on their roster. Luckily for the Bulls, the NBA get their “Chinese players” back really soon. The player I’m looking it as the the #1 Target for the Bulls is JR Smith. Yes he is a potential headache waiting to happen for any team, but he has the talent to counter it and he’s a perfect fit for this team. He has the ability to put this team over the top as they say. As a matter of fact, he can join any of the contending teams and instantly make them that much better; that’s something the Bulls cannot let happen. The Bulls might have to clear some space by shipping Korver out but at least JR Smith is not a limited player Korver is. It would be ideal if the Bulls can somehow land JR Smith without having to trade someone, therefore the Bulls would have the luxury of a having a backup if either JR or Korver aren’t playing well.

“Deng” it Thibs, use your depth
Last season there were concerns over the huge minutes being played by Luol Deng. This season is no different and it might comeback and hurt this team really bad. Again this season is shortened and requires more game to be played in a short amount of time. I called the Hawks beating a blessing in disguise and this is why; I glad Deng finally showed signs of exhaustion and it was lucky it happened this early into the season. This lead to Thibs being forced to actually and finally using the deep bench in the game. Bulls haters might be jumping for joy seeing them get slaughtered like that, but they actually should be worried. It says alot when Atlanta put their starters back into the game against the Bulls Bench to make they did not come back and turn this game into a miraculous Bulls’ victory. This team is deep and Rookie Jimmy Butler finally got his case at showcasing his skills. For this team’s sake and for Deng’s sake, I hope it was enough to get Thibs to realize Deng does not have to play that many minutes. He needs his rest “Deng it”.

Chicago Metropolis?
I’m not (trying) to burst anyone’s bubble, but seriously be real. There is no way the Bulls should and will be able to trade for Dwight Howard. The only reason the Bulls should accept a deal for him is if the deal was;
Boozer - Asik - Every 1st Round Pick the Bulls possess - Maybe Korver
- For -
Dwight Howard w/Signed Extension - Any Fillers
Other than that, it would be so much better to wait until the season is over. The Bulls would have to find a taker for Boozer; I’m sure there would be a team willing to take him with a future 1st rounder being included in the deal. Then all the money used to sign Boozer would go towards Dwight’s contract. This would be the dream scenario.
Let’s be honest, there is no way Orlando will take a deal without Luol Deng included. Call me crazy but unless Jimmy Butler is somewhat as good as Deng then it wouldn’t be worth cleaning house for Dwight. The Bulls would have to take Hedo back in the deal and his contract is a deal breaker. Not only would the Bulls have to send Deng out, but it would most likely have to include Noah & Taj or Boozer & Asik. I doubt they would want Boozer because of his contract and since Bulls’ fans are highly critical of Noah right now, I would doubt they would want him. The Bulls would have to sacrifice either Taj or Asik. To be honest, if Boozer & Noah is the offer the Bulls are sending to the Magic, there is no way that beats out a Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum package.
If you asked me, I’d rather have Noah and Taj stay because both would benefit more from Dwight and both would be able to play together with Dwight. Asik is expendable because the Bulls have Mirotic coming over in a few years. Mirotic is a perfect fit to play alongside either Dwight or Noah.

Like I said, it’s better for the Bulls to “Hit a homerun” in free agency then to trade the house. Its too early for trade talk, we haven’t even seen the Bulls full potential yet this season. Besides, this whole Adidas blocking Dwight for Chicago is a little too fishy for me. Then again I guess it is too cold for some people and Michael Jordan’s shadow is too dark. It might also just be a top contending team consisting of Derrick Rose, Luol Deng, Rip Hamilton ,and Joakim Noah isn’t as talented as Deron Williams, Mr. Kim Kardashian, and company or Kobe and some World Peace.

If you ask me, it might be that Dwight is intentionally trying to take attention away from a certain team so it doesn’t end up like a bunch of Knickerbockers when he “joins them”.
